~Writing Well Wednesday Tip~
Have you noticed it?
Restaurant menus have changed. What’s new?
Calorie counts. In May 2018, new regulations requiring restaurants to include calorie counts on their menus went into effect.
It took a long time. The new labeling requirements passed in 2010 and were finalized in 2014, but various extensions along the way gave the food industry more time to make the changes.
Now, both sit-down and fast-food restaurants and other food outlets that have 20 or more locations must post calories on menus, menu boards, and other signage. That means you may see calorie counts showing up at movie theaters, convenience stores, take-out restaurants, and more. Though daily specials can escape the requirements, all other regular menu items must be labeled.
If you’re curious about more than calories, simply ask the manager. The new regulations require that additional information like fat, sodium, sugar, and protein content be provided upon request.
How can this help writers?
Many of us eat on the go. Whether you’re completing a draft at the cafe, grabbing a snack in between work and your book signing, or getting some take-out because you didn’t have time to make dinner, knowing how many calories you’re getting can help you make wise decisions for your overall health.
Next time you eat out, keep your eyes peeled for the calorie count. You may be surprised at how many calories your favorites pack in. That’s the bad news. The good news is that now you can decide to pick new favorites that are better for you in the long run.
